morning glory french toast bake

French Toast meets comfort food meets Minnesota winter morning…with a sprinkle of traditional German topping. Oh yes, it is a glorious morning, indeed.

Ingredients

1 loaf of bread
Most bread will do – carbs are carbs! – French bread, Texas toast, Hawaiian bread, etc. Just stay clear of sourdough, grain or whole wheat.
1 1/4 C milk
1 C heavy whipping cream or half and half
1 splash lemon juice or 1/2 lemon squeezed
8 eggs
1 C greek yogurt, plain
2 Tbsp vanilla
Pure vanilla please! Ditch the extract; it doesn't belong in your pantry!
1/2 C brown sugar
1/4 C sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp coarse sea salt

Topping

1/2 C brown sugar
1/2 C sugar
1 C flour
1 stick butter

You can make half of the above, if less is desired. But honestly, I couldn't imagine why less would be desired.

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 on convection mode

1. Break bread into small 1" pieces and place into very large bowl.

2. Combine the following and set aside: milk, whipping cream, and lemon juice.

3. Whisk together: eggs, yogurt, vanilla, sugars (from the bake, not the topping list), cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add milk mixture from step 2 and mix well with wire whisk.

4. Pour mixture over bread crumbs and gently fold in until all bread is well-coated.

5. Pour mixture into 9x13 greased baking dish.

6. Prepare your topping: with a fork, combine flour and sugars. Melt butter and slowly pour over mixture while mixing with fork to form small balls. Sprinkle over bake mixture.

7. Bake for 45 minutes or until mixture is no longer if desired.

*Now, this is where baking becomes fun. Feel free to experiment. For a more "Flan-like" consistency, follow as directed above.
For a more coarse cake-like texture: omit the greek yogurt, lower your temperature to 325 and bake a bit longer.
